New direct-acting antiviral agents are highly effective and safe in the treatment for chronic hepatitis C. Nevertheless, interferon-based antiviral treatment may be still used in a proportion of patients with HCV-infection. The review describes current indications for combination treatment with pegylated interferon-alpha and ribavirin (e.g. favourable IL-28B genotype, low viral load and absense of advanced liver fibrosis, HCV-2 and HCV-3 infection) ± direct-acting antiviral agents.
