The author critically evaluates the role of Helicobacter pylori in the development of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer and provides arguments against so called functional gastrointestinal disorders (functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome) without underlying histological changes. It is suggested that published consensus statements may contradict basic principles of the evidence-based medicine.
