Diagnosis and the choice of treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus

In the XXI century, type 2 diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic status. Patients with type 2 diabetes are oгияften asymptomatic and may have the conditions for years before diagnosis when they present with microangiopathic and macroangiopathic complications. The latter can be the first manifestation of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, screening for type 2 diabetes should be conducted by different specialists, i.e. general practitioners, cardiologists, nephrologists, ophtalmologists, etc. The authors review diagnostic criteria for type 2 diabetes, other forms of diabetes that can mimick type 2 diabetes in adults and children, advantages and disadvantages of the modern glucose-lowering medications.
