Reviewarticlesummarizes a definition of chronic pancreatitis, its prevalence in males and females in the general population, latest classifications (2001 and 2007), clinical picture and complications, the most reliable visualising and laboratory diagnostic methods. Current treatment for abdominal pain relies on the use of modern opioid analgesics and gabapentoids, antidepressants, antioxydants, acid secretion inhibitors and enzymes potentiating analgesic effect of opioids.Enzyme replacementtherapyisessentialforpatients with chronic pancreatitis complicated by pancreatic exocrine dysfunction. Treatment for pancreatic endocrine dysfunction and for autoimmune chronic panrcreatitis is also discussed.
