Deprescribing of proton pump inhibitors in the elderly

Proton pump inhibitors are among the most commonly prescribed drugs. Improper use of proton pump inhibitors (not according to clinical recommendations) is a common phenomenon that results in an increased risk of adverse reactions, particularly in the elderly. Algorithms of proton pump inhibitor deprescribing have been developed in Canada and Australia.The authors review the evidence for the proton pump inhibitor deprescribing and the main provisions of this algorithm, including the regimens of deprescribing and monitoring its effectiveness.
