Current European guidelines on arterial hypertension: new positions and unsolved issues

The number of patients with arterial hypertension is increasing and can reach up to 1.5 billion by 2025. Therefore, we need new more effective approaches to diagnosis and management of arterial hypertension. A review article summarizes the previous and current guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) for the management of arterial hypertension, which were published in 2013 and 2018, respectively.The authors compare the different chapters and sections of the guidelines covering diagnosis of hypertension, estimation of cardiovascular risk, target blood pressure, choice of treatment depending on age and comorbidity.
