Relevance of STOPP/START criteria for potentially inappropriate prescribing in the elderly

Aim

To assess the relevance of STOPP/START-criteria in accordance with current clinical guidelines.

Material and methods

A literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), National Register of Medicines and Federal Electronic Medical Library of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The following keywords were used: elderly, drugs, polypharmacy, decision support systems, STOPP/START criteria.

Results

Among 80 STOPP criteria, one is no longer relevant, and the wording of 11 criteria has been clarified. Among the 34 START criteria, one is no longer relevant, and the wording of 12 criteria has been clarified. We used these data to propose the revised formulations of the criteria.

Conclusion

The revised formulations of STOPP/STARTcriteria can be used for developing computerized decision support systems and to improve the quality of medical care.
